It is a ritualistic dance form with its origin in the realms of Rajasthan and is performed in front of Goddess Bhavani during the `Ghat-Sthapana`, on the festival of Navratri. Matka Bhavai is the name derived from the matka or ghat placed in front of Bhavai Mata or the mother of the universe. This is a dance-drama, with a specific social message and contains satire and sarcasm in the performances which scoff at a social structure that is caste-ridden and status-smitten. Pots play a powerful role in the portrayal of the Bhavai art. The dancers use it significantly and effectively in their performances, which are power packed and full of punch and panache.
