The element of fire is the special feature in the dare-devil `agni-nritya` or fire dance where the dancers dare to play with fire as they perform their dance moves. It is a challenge to perform this extremely difficult form of dance, which involves breathtaking fire stunts. However the Banjara community, who have adopted it from their ancestors, do it with a lot of spunk and skill by holding fire-rods in their hands and doing intricate dance moves, by turning and twisting their torso in accordance with the blaring music.
They also fill their mouth with kerosene, which is lit when they open their mouth and keep moving the fire-rods on their hands, legs and heads. The amazing dancers and their expertise is stunning, making one stare with wonder at the marvel that unfolds when sparks fly. It is thrilling, to say the least.
